Harry Gilleland--Poet

Today's post is one full of information! Harry Gilleland is the author of Poetic Musings of an Old, Fat Man. (love that title!)

Poetic Musings of an Old, Fat Man is the third published collection of poetry written by poet Harry E. Gilleland, Jr. This new collection of 81 storoems and poems will engage its readers by making them think about life and leaving them pondering their emotions and beliefs. It will also bring smiles and maybe a tear or two. Contained within this collection are forty-seven rhyming poems and "storoems", a format coined by Gilleland. A storoem is a hybrid between a story and a poem, i.e. a story told with poetic techniques. The collection also contains twenty-eight free-verse poems, four acrostic poems, and two limericks. These writings are poetry for the thinking person, be he/she someone who is a poetry lover or someone who normally does not read poetry. This poetry is easily readable and accessible to all -- poetry for the poet and the common man alike. A wide variety of subjects are addressed, including everyday life events, observations of nature, tales of fantasy, expressions of love, and much more. This wonderful collection will surprise and delight all readers.

Here is a sample from the book:

My Yesterdays

My yesterdays
stretch out behind me
in a winding path that
disappears over the horizon
beyond my memory.

Some yesterdays were
red-letter days of triumph
and personal joy, days of
some momentous occasion
in my life. Others were black
days of pain and suffering.
Most were merely plain,
unremarkable days
of no particular note.
All have melded together
forming the memories
marking the passage
of my existence on Earth.

I treasure all my yesterdays
since each day was a brick
that contributed to building
the mosaic of my life.
My yesterdays carried me
up the long hill to today,
where I stand looking wistfully
back at them, my yesterdays…
knowing now my yesterdays
outnumber my tomorrows.

I’ve learned I should endeavor
to make each today become
a shining, glorious yesterday,
for my yesterdays arehow my life was spent

Harry E. Gilleland, Jr. is a 64-year-old southerner. Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, he earned a B.S. (1966) and a M.S. (1968) in Microbiology from the University of Georgia in Athens. Following three years of service in the U.S. Army as a captain, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, he returned to earn a Ph.D. in Microbiology from UGA in 1973. He then headed north to complete a two-year fellowship at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. In July of 1975 he joined the faculty of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. After twenty-nine years of teaching microbiology to medical and graduate students and performing vaccine research, Harry retired in July of 2004. Today Harry lives in Shreveport with his wonderful wife Linda. Harry enjoys being able to engage in his passion for writing full-time.

Harry has previously published three books of his personal poetry: Poetry For The Common Man: Storoems and Poems (2003, ISBN 1411600649), Gilleland Poetry: Storoems and Poems (2005, ISBN 1411629272), and Poetic Musings of an Old, Fat Man (2008, ISBN 978-1-4357-1242-3). In addition, Harry has published two books of prose, a tale of fantasy entitled Bob the Dragon Slayer (2005, ISBN 1411633156) and a contemporary romance story entitled White Lightning Road (2006, ISBN 978-1-4116-8693-9).

Harry Gilleland’s poetry recently won two cash awards in the 2008 Tom Howard Poetry Contest associated with Winning Writers.com. Harry’s rhyming storoem The Old Salty Poems won 2nd Place with a $1,000 prize, while his free-verse poem The Assembled Waiters earned $200 for a High Distinction award. Harry was the only poet to win two cash awards in the contest.

Harry Gilleland’s poetry has been included in four multi-author print anthologies of poems and short stories, in several poetry e-zines, and on numerous Internet poetry forums, in addition to his own three published collections. His storoems (story-poems) and poems are readily accessible to all readers, including those who do not regularly read poetry. Harry views the world with a poet’s eye.

I would like to share with you two answers Harry gave when he was interviewed by : Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com http://tinyurl.com/chtbgc

Norm: How would you define a good poem?

Harry:

A good poem is one that connects with its readers. Regardless of the form – rhyming or free verse, short or long, etc.—any poem that touches the mind and emotions of the readers so that they take away something from the poem is a good poem. A good poem will linger in the readers' minds and makes them consider their own feelings and beliefs anew.

Norm: What is your philosophy of life?

Harry:
Wow! My philosophy of life? I guess I'd have to say to try to be the best person that you can be. Try to live so that your parents, your spouse, your children are proud of the person you are. Put family first; they will be there for you at all the critical points of your life and will be truer to you than any friends you have. Then, try to see the big picture in life and don't let the small, everyday stuff stress you out. Save the stress for the real problems that will arise in your life, not the waiting in line at the grocery store, sitting in traffic, etc. Meet your obligations well, but try to have fun while doing so. Live so that at the end of your life you will be proud of all that you did. Fill your heart with love, kindness, compassion, and tolerance and the world will seem a better place to live

Talking With L. Diane Wolfe

I would like to thank L. Diane Wolfe for stopping by and visiting with us these past few days. Please enjoy the following interview-and leave a comment or two :-)

L. Diane Wolfe the person:

1. What three words do you think describe you as a human being?

Spunky, determined, optimistic!

2. How do you think others would describe you?

Energetic, focused, stubborn, naïve

3. Please tell us what you are most passionate about outside of writing.

I’m passionate about my husband, my church family, photography, and roller coasters! (No thrill quite like riding a really big roller coaster…)

4. Do you have any pets? If so, introduce us to them.

Rocko & Spunky! A few years ago, these little black kitties adopted us. We’d just lost Calvin & Hobbes, so they filled a void. They are energetic, crazy, and just about the weirdest cats I have ever owned! One of these days, I’ll come home and find them on the ceiling fan…

5. What is your most precious memory?

I have two special memories. My father died when I was eleven, but I still clearly recall spending time with him in his workshop, polishing his rock collection while he exercised his carpentry skills. My other special moment occurred during a trip to Scotland – my husband stood on the banks of Loch Ness and it was so magical!

6. What is your most embarrassing memory?

My most embarrassing moment is actually someone else’s! I remember dumping an entire large soda down the front of me while at a restaurant. My friend’s uncle just stared in disbelief while my friend hid under the table! (I, of course, laughed myself silly!)

7. If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing with your life?

Probably what I was doing before I got into writing and speaking – photography! I owned a mobile studio and did portraits, weddings, stock photos, magazine shots – you name it! I still love photography and do it for recreation now.

8. In two paragraphs or less write your obituary.

She was a devoted wife who loved people and animals. Diane was very involved with her Christian family, facilitating the Singles group at her church. An accomplished photographer, her images appeared in many publications and captured unique moments in time. A professional speaker and author, Diane’s goal was to inspire others to overcome their challenges and pursue their dreams. She possessed a zest for life and measured success by how many lives she touched.
(*She did not, however, enjoy writing her own obituary!)

L. Diane Wolfe the writer:

9. Can you describe the time you realized you were indeed a “real” writer?

The completion of my first book gave me that feeling, but I more clearly recall the moment when I believed I could be a real writer. My English teacher in 9th grade pulled me aside after reading some of my work and encouraged me to pursue a career. That truly sparked the belief I’d be a writer one day!

10. What is going on with your writing these days?

Putting the finishing edits on the remaining books in The Circle of Friends series.

11. What are your future goals for your writing?

I want to do more non-fiction! “Overcoming Obstacles with SPUNK!” really ignited a burn to do more inspirational works.

12. Can you describe a typical writing day for you?

In one word – chaos!! I am currently knee-deep in promotions, plus at the height of my speaking season, so my days are fairly chaotic. I do maintain a structured to-do list, though. Fortunately, I have never scheduled time for my writing – I continue to write a little here and a little there throughout the day…

13. Why do you write?

I write to inspire others to pursue their dreams…

14. What writer most inspires you? Why?

Definitely my mentor & friend, p.m. terrell. Trish is the most genuine & positive person! She inspires me to be a better person as an author.

15. How do you define your writing?

Accessible, uplifting, and positive!

16. In one sentence—what do you want people to say about your writing in fifty years?

That after all this time, they continue to re-read and draw encouragement from my books.

L. Diane Wolfe the details:

17. Can you tell us where to find more information on you? Website? Blog?

www.thecircleoffriends.net www.spunkonastick.net www.circleoffriendsbooks.blogspot.com

18. Is there a place where readers can reach you?

My fans can always email me at wolferock@earthlink.net or friend me at any of my social sites – FaceBook, DeviantArt, MySpace – look for Spunk On A Stick!

19. Can you list all your book titles so people can look for them?

The Circle of Friends, Book I…Lori - $20.95, 6x9 Trade paperback, 368 pages, Fiction/YA, ISBN 978-0-9816210-0-5 / 0-9816210-0-7

Overcoming Obstacles with SPUNK! The Keys to Leadership & Goal-Setting – $13.95, 6x9 Trade paperback, 176 pages, Non-fiction/Self-help
ISBN 978-0-9816210-2-9 / 0-9816210-2-3

20. For new readers—what can they expect when they read your book(s)?

Expect encouragement! Expect inspiration! Expect to walk away from either my fiction or non-fiction with a positive self-image and ready to pursue your dreams!

In conclusion:

21. Take as much space as necessary to speak to our readers—what would you like them to know about you and your writing?

Through my writing and speaking, I aim to encourage and uplift. Too often, we hear only negative – we can’t succeed, we can’t escape our past, we can’t better our lives. I believe everyone is capable of living a full and rewarding life! The most precious thing in this world is people, and our level of success is determined by how many of those people we touch in a positive manner. If I help just one person rise above a poor self-image and accomplish their goals in life, then that will be a great achievement indeed!

Yet despite her certainty in the pool, something inhibits Lori from achieving her full potential. Her focus on
swimming has left little time for relationships. Lacking in confidence, Lori’s light has few opportunities to shine.

When an altercation with the school bullies brings her to the attention of the star quarterback, Lori finds herself in a unique position. Jason’s affections renew her hope and force the shy swimmer out of her comfort zone. But, will it be enough to achieve her lifelong dream.

Book II - Sarah

No awards for second best…

A student at Georgia Tech, Sarah Martin is bold, intelligent, and appears destined for a career in biochemistry. But her poor self-image has been masked by behavior unbecoming to a young lady brought up in an affluent Southern family. Estranged from her father, envious of her best friend’s perfect life, Sarah feels inadequate and unable to measure up to expectations.

When a friendship suddenly turns romantic, Sarah questions herself even more. A future NFL receiver, Matt’s joyful spirit and social status appear beyond her reach. Yet beneath his eager smile and playboy antics lies a young man hiding in shadows and desperate to trust again.

Faced with challenges, they must help each other come to terms with past disappointments before insecurities and doubt threaten to sabotage their future.

Book III -- James

Haunted by a troubled past…

The future appears bright for James Sheppard. Emerging from a troubled childhood, he is blessed with talent and a good work ethic. Excelling in his classes and at the campus newspaper, James’s goal of editor appears within his grasp.

However, years of abuse and loneliness have dampened his spirit. By the time Maria enters his world, James is nearing the breaking point. Her innocent love slowly fills the void in his life, boosting his confidence and giving him hope.

When a crisis abruptly forces him into adulthood, James is saddled with more responsibility than expected. Struggling to cope with the situation, the past returns to haunt him. Will James find peace before the mistakes of his father destroy him completely?

Book IV - Mike

A prisoner of guilt for so long…

Mike Taylor is the epitome of stability. His family is proud of his academic and athletic achievements at Georgia Tech, and despite the temptations of college life, he has maintained his moral standards.

Yet beneath the peaceful surface, Mike is consumed with guilt, fearing condemnation and rejection. A former girlfriend’s abortion and the intense love he feels for his roommate’s wife constantly remind Mike of his failures. Unable to forget and full of shame, he refuses to forgive himself.

When Danielle enters his life, he realizes he can no longer hide the past. Will she be able to reach him or is Mike past the point of redemption?

Book V --Heather

A new beginning waits at Clemson for Heather Jennings. Honored with the position of assistant, she will finally realize her dream of coaching basketball. Heather is ready to focus on her duties, using sheer force if necessary, and prove her independence.

Unfortunately, her triumph feels subdued as Heather’s father and greatest advocate lies dying of cancer. Battling her grief, she must also deal with a sister who appears incapable of responsibility or achievement. And once basketball season begins, a talented but cocky player who resembles her in every manner challenges all that remains of Heather’s patience.

During her quest for a new car, she encounters a man capable of handling her bold and feisty attitude. Straightforward and smug, he entices her to date him, and despite his gruff nature, shows compassion toward her situation. However, the last thing Heather needs is a serious relationship with a man equally fixated on work and opposed to marriage…

Wow--don't these sound excellent??

As you recall from yesterday (You did read yesterday's post, didn't you?) Ms. Wolfe has a new book out titled Overcoming Obstacles With Spunk. I would like to share with you an article written by Ms. Wolfe by the same title. Enjoy!

Do you feel as if your youthful dreams have become mature regrets? Have you hit so many roadblocks you feel drained and devoid of hope? The road to success can be rediscovered if you learn to overcome your obstacles with spunk!

The first thing we need to do is clarify one truth about obstacles – they are what you see when your eyes come off your goals. For some, multiple roadblocks may have caused your goals to become faded memories. However, these obstacles can be overcome and your spunk restored by putting into action five key components.

Humans can control only one thing – their attitude! Life’s many challenges are not the real problem; it is your attitude towards the problem that may need adjustment. Your reaction will be directed by your attitude, whether it is positive or negative. If obstacles are to be overcome, a positive mental attitude must be developed. Visions of defeat will fade with a ‘can-do’ outlook on life. Regardless of the problem, positive can be found in every situation you face. Master a positive attitude and the battle is half won!

The greatest skill we develop is the ability to get along with other people. Using people to get ahead and treating them poorly will not further your cause. You must learn to genuinely care about your fellow man and raise him up rather than tear him down. Every human craves approval, to be noticed and valued, and a simple compliment can vastly improve one’s day. You do not want to be the one that causes joy by your departure rather than your arrival! Bringing out the best in others will produce the best in you as well. Let some of that positive attitude spill over onto other people!

Your belief system could be in need of a complete overhaul, too. We believe what we are programmed to believe, and it’s not always positive. Negative comments from friends and family, repeated setbacks and past failures may have reduced your self-esteem. These need to be wiped from your memory and replaced with positive expectations! No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. Stop picturing defeat and go forward as if you have already succeeded. Expect the best. Your confidence will grow every time you step out of your comfort zone, further boosting your self-image. Reprogramming your beliefs will take time, but doing so will change your outlook on life for the better.

Armed with a positive attitude, people skills and optimism, you are ready to break through the final wall – fear. This invisible force has crippled entire nations, but it does not have to stop you. Every human carries fears of failing, usually stemming from past experiences. The only way to conquer fear is to take action. It will not vanish on its own and pushing through your fears is ultimately less frightening than living with them. Every person experiences fear when trying something new. Recognize this fear and then press forward anyway! Eventually you will look back and realize you are no longer afraid.

The final secret to overcoming your obstacles lies in the ability to set goals. Most people possess wishes and dreams, but never get around to setting concrete goals. They confuse the decision-making process with the how-to process and spend all of their energies formulating the perfect plan of attack. Set your goals first and your brain will figure out the how. Be realistic in your expectations, but force yourself to stretch as well. Create stepping-stones of success by setting short and long-range goals. If you miss a deadline, simply adjust and try again. The only failure lies in giving up, so refuse to quit!

Apply these five keys to your life and be prepared for some tremendous results! Continue building on your successes and feeding your passion. The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire – let yourself burn! With optimism and a little spunk, your obstacles will soon be but distant memories.

I'd like to introduce you to l. Diane Wolfe, author and speaker.

L. Diane Wolfe, Professional Speaker & Author

Known as “Spunk On A Stick”, L. Diane Wolfe conducts seminars on promoting, leadership and goal setting. Ten years associating with a motivation training system and her experience as a foster parent gave her the in-depth knowledge of relationships, personality traits and success principals. The author offers her seminars through community colleges, organizations and clubs. Wolfe travels the East Coast extensively for media interviews and speaking engagements. She averages over one hundred appearances each year, maintains a dozen websites & blogs, manages an online writer’s group, and contribute articles for several other sites. She also does characterization sessions for schools and speaks to writer’s groups.

Wolfe’s upcoming title, “Overcoming Obstacles With SPUNK! The Keys to Leadership & Goal-Setting”, is an inspirational self-help book. The author has tied all of her goal-setting and leadership seminar’s information together into one complete, enthusiastic package! Seven other authors also contributed to this title, which features the five keys to success and summary points for each chapter.

The author’s other work is a young adult series entitled The Circle of Friends. It follows a group of sports-minded couples through relationships, college and into their early careers. Meant to inspire as well as entertain, these books have been described as “encouragement personified”. This series feature morally grounded, positive stories that appeal to both teens and concerned parents. The stories intertwine as the characters learn that with belief and encouragement, they can achieve anything. Many of today’s young adult novels are salacious & controversial and glorify frequent sexual activity, negative attitudes, and deviant behavior. Wolfe’s series focuses on wholesome and uplifting stories that are suitable for adults and teens alike.

She began writing as a teenager and was inspired to return by the adage that everyone needs “something to hope for and someone to love”. The author loves people, and her optimism is fueled by her spunky, sanguine personality. Wolfe does not believe in the word impossible and is willing to do whatever it takes to spread the message of hope found within her series. A Christian and a vegetarian, Wolfe enjoys sports and has a passion for roller coasters. Growing up in Salem, Oregon, the author now resides North Carolina with her husband and two cats. She is self-employed and a professional photographer.

When Adventure Turns Into Addiction

We have all heard the expression "adventure on the high seas". It bings to mind sailers, endles ocean waves, exotic ports with white sands and endless sun. For some, that may be true, but all to often, that adventure turns sour. This is just the case with Darryl Hagar, author of the newly release The Man Overboard: “How a Merchant Marine Officer Survived the Raging Storm of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction”

A graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, class of ‘85, Hagar went to sea as an Able Body Seaman with Military Sealift Command where his role focused on ship maintenance, maintaining mooring lines as the ship’s cargo was loaded and unloaded, and steering the ship in and out of port. After a year-long stint with Crest Oil Tankers, in 1987 he moved on to Maritime Overseas Corporation and gained the designation Third Mate where he was responsible for standing the bridge watch, supervising the able body seaman, ensuring shipboard safety practices were adhered to and was in charge of running the ship’s pumps and valves during the loading and unloading process. Promoted to Second Mate in 1990 Hagar attained his professional goal of becoming the ship’s navigator. The navigator’s primary role is laying out the voyage, maintaining charts, radar and other electronics and includes the responsibility of ship’s radio operator. Moving on to Alaska Tanker Company in 1999, Hagar earned Chief Mate status. He retired from the industry in 2005.

Now Hagar calls the Port of Portland, Maine his home where he lives with his 9 year old son, Darryl II. Since completing his memoir he is preparing for a nationwide book tour beginning in March. He still spends significant time visiting jails, colleges and high schools talking about drug and alcohol dependency and helping people spot trouble signs of addiction – all the while carrying forward the message that no matter how far you’ve sunk, there is hope for recovery.

The Man Overboard is Darryl's story--a vivid account of one man’s tumultuous 25 year round-the-world odyssey, shrouded in the haze of drugs and a sea of alcohol, and punctuated by indulgence, abuse, fear, illicit sex, violence, and frequent jail time, is painstakingly and painfully documented in this 500 page memoir.

Drawn in by the compelling tales and sometimes exotic settings, readers will be shocked at this glimpse into the little-exposed epidemic of addiction at sea, and will come away amazed there aren’t more shipping disasters like the Exxon Valdez. But it’s the drama when Hagar returns home and his struggle through recovery that makes the book real and relatable. A broken relationship, nearly losing custody of his son, and alienation from his family and friends are just some of the costs Hagar pays and portrays faithfully in his 500 page memoir The Man Overboard.

The Man Overboard; Darryl Hagar; Trade Paperback; 590 pages; 6” x 9”; Publication Date: March 24th 2009

Finally, I'd like to share with you a brief piece Maureen wrote on being a natural networker:

How to Become a Natural Networker?

By Maureen G. Mulvaney, MGM

Most children are natural net workers. The minute we were mobile, we began making friends - on the playground, at the dentist’s office and in school. To reclaim your ability to network naturally, all you have to do is reclaim your childlike curiosity. It’s as easy as one, two, three.

1. Shift Your Perceptions of Networking. As children we heard “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” As adults, we are asked to attend networking events and accost strangers with our Business Cards. This isn’t natural. Our parents and teachers who didn’t want us talking to strangers encouraged us to make friends. Shift your artificial perception of networking to doing what you’ve been doing since childhood: meeting and making new friends. You must also shift your perception of where to meet your new friends. As kids, we networked anywhere there was another kid. Natural networking takes place everywhere there are people. Look at all the places you go during the day: dropping off kids at school, the grocery store, the airport, and the bank. View these places with a new set of eyes and make them your portable networking office. Make your office hours any time there is anopportunity to make a new friend.

2. Talk to Your ‘New Friend’ The easiest way to talk to a new friend is to ask questions and be genuinely interested. Children can’t help themselves from asking questions. As adults we must unleash our childlike curiosity. Psychology 101 teaches, “The one asking the question is in control.”'Take control of your destiny by asking questions. A simple, magic question that can start ameaningful conversation is, “You must love what you do, right?” To a new mother, you might say, “Oh, what an adorable baby, don’t you just love being a mom?” To a dentist, you might say: “Oh, you’re a dentist, you must love your work, right?” Ask the magic question in a caring manner and you’re new friend will respond openly and honestly. You will discover her needs or dissatisfactions. Either way, you have entry into a thoughtful conversation.

3. Make the Exchange. Once you have made a ‘new friend’, you’ll want to keep in touch. As kids, we just said, “Wanna come over to my house to play?” Friends naturally say, “Let’s Keep in Touch.” Askfor their contact information or business card. Simply say, “I’d like to keep in touch, got a card?”

Always carry business cards, and when you hear, “I don’t have a card,” say, “No problems, here’s one.” Because we’ve all been trained to make friends, most people will hand you their contact information without hesitation.

Natural networking is meeting and making new friends wherever you go, curiously asking questions and making sure you keep in touch. It’s exactly what you’ve done your whole life. Go out and make a new friend, today?

Before the Scalpel by Panchali Dhar, MD -- A Review

ISBN 978-0-9816453-0-8

To purchase your copy, please visit:

http://www.amazon.com/Before-Scalpel-Everyone-Should-Anesthesia/dp/0981645305

When a person is told they ned to have surgery, or their child neds surgery, often the stress involved is so intense that thinking about anesthesia is likely to be the last thing on your mind. If it does enter your mind, it may seem scary or confusing-or both. In Before the Scalpel Dr. Dhar covers the entire process so completely, there is no need for confusion.

Starting with the anesthesiologist. Dr. Dhar explains what a patient needs to question about credentials. She goes on to explain the various options available and even takes the time to explain what equipment a patient will encounter and what each is for. Next the procedure is explained. Dr. Dhar then goes on to explain special concerns that need to be addresed by those who are overweight or children. She covers dental work and plastic surgery. Dr. Dhar even covers the recovery period and what you will experience. She has truly thought of everything possible.

I found it particularly helpful that, at the end of each chapter, there is a section provided, along with space to make notes, that covers the necessary information a patient should obtain in advance. These sections make it so much easier for patients to cover everything. I was particularly amazed at the differences in children that need to be taken into account when they undergo surgery. She lists things I would never have thought about--but things that could make a big difference!

This book is a must-read for anyone who has surgery in their future. Written in layman's terms, Dr. Dhar takes the mystery-and therefore the fear, out of anesthesia. The glossary covers every possible term you may hear and there is an extensive section of references for further reading if you wish. I would recommend this book without hesitation. I believe it should be available in every hospital to help prepare patients for surgery.

This book was not only an informative read, it was also engaging. Dr. Dhar has taken a subject that could easily have been dry and boring and used an entertaining voice, numerous drawings and photographs and elements of reader interaction to produce a book that makes learning easy and interesting.

A Little More on David Snowdon and The Mind of a Genius

A short time ago author David Snowdon stopped by to visit us. I thought today would be a good day to take another quick look at The Mind of a Genius, Snowdon's second novel. Please enjoy the excerpt!

The Mind of a Genius by David Snowdon.
Category: Crime & Mystery Paperback: 288 pages Language: English ISBN: 0955265010

"The black Mercedes taxi pulled up outside the main entrance of the Clinton Hotel, and Laura Prince paid the driver leaving a generous tip, and slid out of the car, as the hotel doorman opened the door of the car for her. She flashed him a smile and walked into the lobby. The time was now 21.02 and a few people were checking in at the reception desk. As she walked into the lobby, she realized that she didn’t feel like going straight to bed or sitting around in their room, watching the TV alone. Although she was feeling tipsy, she felt like having another drink in the hotel bar. She struggled with the thought for a moment, knowing that it wasn’t respectable for a woman to drink alone in a bar. A guy could get away with it, but it wasn’t right for a woman.

Unaccompanied woman normally gave people the wrong impression and were frowned on. But as she walked through the lobby, the alcohol in her system got the better of her, and she decided to have a drink in the bar. She walked into the hotel bar, which was nearly empty and headed for the bar. The barman, a dark, Italian-looking guy who was standing behind the bar talking to his friend who was sitting at the bar, came towards her with a smile. "Hello madam. What can I get for you?""

Willing Spirits by Phyllis Schieber-A Review

Yesterday, I told you about Willing Spirits by Phyllis Schieber. The synopsis only touches the bare surface of this book. Ms. Schieber has written a novel that represents every female that has ever lived. She opens a woman's soul and presents it to her readers on a golden cloth woven with words as smooth as the finest satin.

As I followed Jane and Gwen throughout this book, I laughed and cried with them, often simultaneously. Every woman will find themself in at least one of these two--for Phyllis Schieber has stripped away the false labels of her characters and infused them with the very spirit that makes a woman-mother, wife, friend, daughter, all the "roles" are there, but what follows you long after you turn the last page is the feeling that at last the term "woman" has been defined accurately-strong yet vulnerable, sassy yet demure, confident yet full of doubt. It is all here and writen so the interweaving of traits create the piece of art that IS female.

For every woman who has ever loved and lost, for every mother, daughter, sister and friend-this is a must-read work. For every man who has ever loved a woman, had a mother or raised a daughter, you will find an understanding and appreciation of them beyond what you ever imagined.

While my Rainbow Scale of Excellence is limited to a perfect rainbow of seven colors, I found myself for the first time wanting to rate a book higher. Willing Spirits can easily be a double rainbow and I would like to take a minute to thank Phyllis for this wonderful contribution to the literary world.

That said, I would like to present Willing Spirits with the very first Rainbow Award for Writing Excellence:

Phyllis Scheiber Stops By For a Visit

Today I'd like to tell you a litle about a wonderful author, Phyllis Scheiber, and her book Willing Spirits. Phyllis is also offering those who comment a chance to win a copy of this book. Please see the end of the post for details-and do stop back tomorrow when I will be posting a review of Willing Spirits.

Phyllis Tells Us About Herself:

The first great irony of my life was that I was born in a Catholic hospital. My parents, survivors of the Holocaust, had settled in the South Bronx among other new immigrants. My mother was apparently so nervous she barely slept the entire time she was in the hospital, fearing her fair-skinned, blue-eyed newborn would be switched with another baby. When my paternal grandfather, an observant Jew, came to see his newest granddaughter in the hospital, he was so uncertain of how to behave around the kindly nuns that he tipped his yarmulke to them each time one passed. It was in this haze of paranoia and neuroses, as well as black humor, that the makings of a writer were initiated.

In the mid-fifties, my family moved to Washington Heights, an enclave for German Jews, known as “Frankfurt-on-the-Hudson.” The area offered scenic views of the Hudson River and the Palisades, as well as access to Fort Tryon Park and the mysteries of the Cloisters. I graduated from George Washington High School. Among its famous graduates was Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State (my grandmother played cards with his mother at the YMWHA on Nagle Avenue).

I graduated from high school at sixteen, went on to Bronx Community College, transferred to and graduated from Herbert H. Lehman College with a B.A. in English and a New York State license to teach English. I earned my M.A. in Literature from New York University and later my M.S. as a developmental specialist from Yeshiva University. I have worked as a high school English teacher, a special education teacher, and as a learning disabilties specialist in several college programs.

Reading was the first line of defense against anything I did not want to do. “I’m reading,” was an excuse my parents never challenged. Education was paramount in our home. There were weekly trips to the library, and the greatly anticipated Friday afternoon story hour. Everything about words seemed interesting and important.. I could make sense of the world if I put it on paper. I could even make the world better; people could become smarter and more attractive, and I could make people laugh and cry at will. Writng was powerful. I thought in stories, answered questions in my head and added, “she said” at the end of a sentence. I still do.

My first novel, Strictly Personal, for young adults, was published by Fawcett-Juniper. Willing Spirits was published by William Morrow. My most recent novel, The Sinner’s Guide to Confession, was released by Berkley Putnam on July 1, 2008. In March 2008, Berkley Putnam will issue the first paperback publication of Willing Spirits. I live in Westchester County, New York where I work privately with students, teaching writing. I am currently working on a new novel.

About Willing Spirits:

Phyllis Schieber’s graceful debut novel is the story of two friends leading lives most women will find familiar. As Jane Hoffman and Gwen Baker attempt to understand their roles as daughters, wives, mothers and lovers, they depend on their friendship to cushion their disenchantment and to celebrate their triumphs.

Jane Hoffman, a schoolteacher in her forties, is forced to confront her reasons for remaining in an unhappy marriage when she finds her husband, Arnold, has been unfaithful. His indiscretion hurls Jane into a new life that is alternately terrifying and gratifying. Her love for her daughter Caroline is also tested when an unforeseen event forces Jane to prove that a mother’s love has no boundaries. As Jane negotiates her own murky logic for making the choices she has, she comes to see herself as far more able than she had ever thought.

Gwen Baker, also a teacher and in her forties, survives a rigid Southern upbringing only to marry an egotistical and cruel professor who later abandons her, leaving her to raise their sons, Matt and Ethan, alone. And while she occasionally takes a lover, nothing really satisfies her. It is Jane who ultimately coaxes Gwen out of her isolation. Together they discover that the conflicting and binding roles women assume be endured without other women. Even after Gwen meets Daniel, a colleague’s husband, and finds love, it is Jane who offers the spiritual solace that only another woman can.

Willing Spirits is no ordinary love story. It is a sensual and understanding story about the struggle to heal from failed maternal relationships, the passionate love women feel for their children, the lure of sexual desire and attachment to men who consistently disappoint, and the bond women share that makes it all tolerable. Suffused with humor and tenderness, Willing Spirits is a celebration of love in all its guises—between man and woman, between parent and child, and above all, between women.

George Singleton--Writing Humor With Depth

I have always admired those authors who can effortlesly make others laugh--to do so while also imparting truths and great wisdom is a rare accomplishment. Today's featured author, George Singleton is one of the best when it comes to putting these two concepts together! I have had the pleasure of reading his newest book, Pep Talks, Warnings & Screeds: Indispensable Wisdom and Cautionary Advice for Writers, ( http://www.amazon.com/Pep-Talks-Warnings-Screeds-Indispensable/dp/1582975655/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236172006&sr=1-1 ) and will be posting my review tomorrow. For now, let's meet George Singleton.

I'd like to start this post with a quote from George, to get you in the mood for his take on writing--seeing that his latest book is for writers :-) Here is George Singleton's take on the difference betwen a short story and novel:

"The difference between reading a novel and reading a short story is like drinking cough syrup instead of drinking bourbon to get drunk. One can get drunk on cough syrup, but it sure takes a long time. As for writing both genres, writing a novel is a walk across a bridge, while a short story is a walk across a tightrope. For a writer, too—in terms of craft—the short story offers more problems in that a mistake ends up glaring quicker and brighter than in a novel. So it’s a test of one’s self, really. I doubt that it’s possible to write a perfect novel, but there’s always the hope of writing the perfect short story."

Book Synopsis:

Toddlers - and drunks - bang around hitting walls, tables, chairs, the floor, and other people, trying to find their legs. Writing fiction is a similar process. Sometimes it might take a while before the story gets some balance and moves forward. Sometimes the story takes off as if motor-driven, then crashes into something not foreseen or expected. Learning to be a writer is all about finding your legs, and doing your best to convince onlookers that you know what you’re doing and where you’re going.

In Pep Talks, Warnings & Screeds, acclaimed Southern story writer and novelist George Singleton serves up everything you ever need to know to become a real writer (meaning one who actually writes), in bite-sized aphorisms. It’s Nietzsche’s Beyond Good & Evil meets Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird. It’s cough syrup that tastes like chocolate cake. In other words, don’t expect to get better unless you get a good dose of it, maybe two.Accompanied by more than fifty original full-color illustrations by novelist Daniel Wallace, these laugh-out-loud funny, candid, and surprisingly useful lessons will help you find your own writerly balance so you can continue to move forward.
